Preventing an infection is always cheaper than treating one. That’s why when renovating, hospitals are placing extra focus on hygiene.
According to a white paper in the European Cleaning Journal, “Investing in infection prevention and control in the hospital environment is one of the most cost-effective ways for hospitals to prevent extra expenditures due to healthcare-associated infections.” Which makes it easy to see why hospitals around Europe are using their renovation and refurbishment projects as opportunities to improve hygiene in their wards and operating rooms.
Laminar flow controls the spread of bacteria
Helsingborgs Lasarett in Sweden recently underwent a total renovation. The new wards are fitted with the Oras Medipro 5510A (HANSAMEDIPRO 01622196), a single lever faucet with plenty of room under the spout. Its nickel-free pipes and laminar flow meet the hygiene guidelines of the Swedish Association for Infection Control. Laminar flow means the water is not mixed with air – this helps prevent the spread of different bacteria, such as legionella.

“The products need to meet these hygiene guidelines,” explains Maria Wallin, head of Heating and Sanitation at Sweco Systems. “It’s crucial that the water flow from the faucet doesn’t hit the washbasin’s drain, as there may be bacteria in the strainer that could splash up onto the basin surround.”
Touchless faucets minimise contact
Adjacent to each ward, a washbasin is fitted into a wall niche for the staff. These basins are fitted with the touchless Oras Electra 6334FT (HANSAELECTRA 64442229), while washbasins in other departments have the touchless Oras Electra 6222F (HANSAELECTRA 64421119). In the north wing, the touchless Oras Medipro 5521F (HANSAMEDIPRO 05672129) with Bluetooth makes for easy monitoring and adjustments of the faucets. These faucets ensure the highest level of hygiene for the staff.

“The fact that the Medipro 5521F can also be adjusted via the Oras App is a real bonus. In addition to monitoring water consumption, the operational staff can adjust the values, set automatic flushing and more on their smartphones,” continues Maria.

Long levers ensure easy hands-free operation
One of Europe’s largest and most prestigious university hospitals, The Berlin Charité, recently renovated its emergency department and care centres. In the intensive care wards, where the highest level of hygiene is required, the HANSATEMPRA was chosen for its long operating lever that can be used with just the forearm – perfect for the staff’s daily routine.

All other wards are equipped with the HANSAMEDIPRO 0255 2205 wall fitting with loop lever, which provides hygienic operation and has a design that prevents bacteria from collecting around its edges. And patients are assured a pleasant, safe and hygienic shower experience with the low-aerosol HANSAMEDIJET.
