The Berlin Charité university hospital is the most prominent representative and defender of healthcare standards in Germany. It was founded near Berlin in 1710 as a precautionary measure to care for victims of an anticipated plague outbreak. Since then it has been developed and extended steadily and it is now one of Europe’s largest and most prestigious university hospitals.
